January 10, 2015 was the day that Katie Meyler headlined the annual RetailROI “Super Saturday” IT conference for retail technology executives. That was also the day that the Commerce of Caring was born.
Over the course of an amazing hour, Katie took the entire conference on her personal journey from Bernardsville, New Jersey to West Point, Liberia, one of the most destitute and dangerous towns in West Africa. She shared her experiences starting a school for girls in West Point, and how that evolved to a broader mission to help change lives through education. And she told us how, in the summer of 2014, that mission suddenly and dramatically changed to providing aid to the victims of Ebola, when West Point became the epicenter of the global outbreak.
The entire room was riveted by Katie’s stories of heartbreak and heroism, and how RetailROI – and the people of retail – were making a difference in the lives of the children of Liberia. Throughout the conference, we heard more stories …stories of the impact that RetailROI was making for vulnerable kids in a dozen countries scattered across the globe, including West Africa, South Africa, the Dominican Republic and Honduras, and here at home in places like Chicago and Los Angeles. Homes were constructed. Schools were built. Wells were dug. Computer labs were furnished. Children found forever families. Lives were changed. Lives were saved.
As the day unfolded, we realized how badly these stories—these compelling, dramatic and moving stories—needed to be told. So today, one year later, Aptos is proud to help spread the word.
Why? Because when people hear these stories, they get involved. They donate, they volunteer, and they take action. They join us, and so many others in the retail community, in helping to improve the lives of people who need it most.
That’s our mission for this podcast. It’s to make it possible for more people to hear these stories in the hope that when they do, they, too, will get involved.
Over the course of this series we’ll take you to many of these places. We’ll talk to the people who are working to affect change, and we’ll talk to those whose lives have been changed. We’ll share the stories, the setbacks and the successes of the people of retail as they expand their focus beyond the challenges of omni-channel commerce to make a difference in the world…through the Commerce of Caring.
